Don't know what to do

I need to get this out because no one seems to understand me.

Without computers I am nobody. I played games obsessively from a young age, I don't know how much I played but a huge chunk of my life has been wasted. Looking at a screen too long now hurts my eyes and gamning has a back effect on my wrist which I now want to save to play on my musical keyboard. I quit my computing course at college, it was what I loved and the only thing I was good at, I wanted to be a games designer.

I really want to see more of real life the way we were born to. Where am I supposed to start my life now?

Bob, Glad you are here.

Bob,

Glad you are here. Welcome to OLGA.

I'm sorry that you had to quit something that you felt was the only thing you are good at. That's hard.

Joining real life takes awhile. Here are some ideas.

1. Do something physical if you can, and get out of your house to do it. Walk somewhere, run, whatever. Wander around some interesting part of a city, or take a hike in the country; something to move you around. Exercising other parts of you than just your wrist!

2. Start connecting with people. This takes a long time, but you have to start somewhere. You could join a club or a church, or try to get together with some classmates to study for a test or to do homework; something like that. You won't have gobs of friends right away, but doing a little bit of this will start to make a difference.

3. Do things for yourself. Learn about cooking, or bike riding, or sewing, or start reading science fiction stories or learn to paint/draw, write poetry, play a musical instrument, learn about photography. At first you may be like me--nothing really interested me except playing games, and when I quit, I didn't really have anything else I wanted to do. But try something anyway. If you start doing some of these things, you may find some that you are good at. Before computers (yes, we did have a very high-functioning civilization before computers!), people found many things in life to do. Fun things, great things.

Hang around here some more and read other posts, because there are great ideas floating around. And feel free to come to a chat meeting--they are at 9 p.m. Eastern US time every night. Best wishes to you.

I am a recovering computer game and gambling addict. My recovery birthday: On May 6, 2012 I quit games and began working a program of recovery through OLGA No computer games or slot games for me since December 12, 2012. No solitaire games with real cards since June 2013.

What Dan said, just try

What Dan said, just try something new. Granted, I only quit a few days ago, but whenever I tried quitting in the last two years I tried new things, some of which were fun and some were not but overall it felt great trying new things. In January I tried picking up skiing which I found quite hard and frustrating at times but all in all it was fun nontheless. I went on a few weekend trips to various parts of the country for a change of scenery. These days I'm out running on the weekend which is great fun. I've been to classical concerts and visited art galleries. I enjoy reading fiction on my kindle. I've been interested in philospophy all my life but never got around getting into it because I'd rather spent the day in front of some boring game, but now I can enjoy reading Nietzsche and Kant. All these things I wouldn't have done if I had been gaming at that time. Just give it a try its worth it.
