Warning for Parents of Minor Gamers

The following is the text of a recent post from WoW forums. After some research, I have found that the law of Texas only requires this 'man' to identify himself once - meaning he can have alternate names/characters incognito.

"I am here to tell you I have a sex offender registry and by federal law I have to let everyone I interact with whether it be over the internet or in public about my criminal past as a sex offender.

Below is the link to my texas sex offender registry page. if it does not come up right at first then please use the search feature and search for the name bearden, shane.

Thank you and have a good day and I hope this does not discourage you from playing the game with me.

Its just the law that I have to report this or I could go back to prison.

my son has recently had a manic experience and the doctors say he may be bipolar. He is also

a gamer and has spent the past year plus on halo 3. we have taken away the console while we

wait for the meetings with a psychiatrist but now he is sequestered daily with a computer game.

he is 19 years old and we feel helpless to help him. Would game withdrawal cause extreme

manic behavior????

Excellent question. Don't

Excellent question. Don't let this escape the attention of your doctors!

I have posted here numerous

I have posted here numerous times about my son who also had manic experiences (what that means to each of us could vary) but anyhow his mania was induced as best we can tell from antidepressants and the docs my son dealt with also concluded he was bipolar but it seemed to escape them that the mania part of not sleeping for long periods of time was classic for a gamer not the true mania imho. so in effect my son had true mania which he never ever had before by taking antidepressants but dr. were led to diagnose common mania for what i think most of us here would agree could be "normal" game addict behavior. but your original question is valid and remembering i am not a gamer but from our experience and from what i have read here I would definetly not rule out that what a doctor not familar with addict game play may assume as mania could indeed be withdrawal from games. our son's mania was completely the most bizarre behavior of jibberish, non-stop talking, wild fantastic conversations of the space and time continum, dervish type dancing and movements thought he was invisible, mind control. Definetly above the line for withdrawal symptoms but these were when he taking the antidepressants. but when he spoke to his psychiatrist and he would metnion staying up days at a time they would conclude bipolar (mania) so it was tricky! he is off all meds now and the real mania (the talking etc.) are totally gone as far as we know he moved out but the law hasnt called us so we are pretty sure he is ok that way. but i know from seeing him every week or so the staying up a few days in a row probably still continues. sorry not any help but i would try as hard as i could to talk to the docs about gaming because all the ones we dealt with still rode the fence on the gaming being addictive. not until he had a full evaluation did they listen to us about it. keep in mind he is an adult as well unfortunatley. take care.

Why does it list his

Why does it list his birthdate as "primary"? Does that mean he can have more then one?

A single step is all it takes to begin a long journey...

I checked him out. He was busted for:

ASS 43.26. POSSESSION OR PROMOTION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.

(a) A person commits an offense if: (1) the person knowingly

or intentionally possesses visual material that visually

depicts a child younger than 18 years of age at the time the

image of the child was made who is engaging in sexual conduct...

To Another Gamer: It is because of the two different versions of his name-

you see that it also says (primary) after his FULL name, the one with a

middle name. That the birth date associated with his (primary) name.

To catherinek:

I spoke to kaycee dudley, headquarters field representative at the Sex Offender Registration unit of the Texas Department of Public Safety (512) 424-2800. By law, the sex offenders are required to report any 'monikers,' or names for video game characters or avatars, nick names they use on internet social sites, etc. to law enforcement. Law enforcement then reports that information to the Sex Offender Registry. There is currently discussion underway on whether to include 'moniker' cross referencing on the section of the Sex Offender Registry that the public may access. Time to write your local congressional representative about that! Concerned parents of under age video gamers out there may want to do that in their own state.
