WOW World of Warcraft

I am the mother of a gamer trying to understand this issue. My immediate question is if my son sold his time/character in WOW for over $800, is that unusual? Do these characters go for this much, or is this in the very high end? I'm trying to get a sense for where he is in the spectrum of time spent on this game. Also, I am under the impression that the game tracks your time. Is this correct? Thank you.

$800 seems like a lot.

$800 seems like a lot. $200-500 seems to be the range most commonly reported. The game does track you time in the number of 24 hour days played. Your son should be able to show you that number. If you have access to his account yourself, I believe the command is /played.

Hi, All of these things are

Hi, All of these things are true. If he has an especially well equipped account/character, he could get that much from one of the sites that engages in the grey market purchase and resale of World of Warcraft accounts. OLGA does not officially support or endorse any of these sites, so if you decide to go that route, please take into account the security of your personal information. To get an idea of how much time your son has invested in World of Warcraft, log in to each individual character, and type /PLAYED in the chat interface. This will tell you how many days/hours etc. he has played on that avatar. Good luck!

Hi, I know that /played

Hi, I know that /played works, I also think there is some kind of a program or site where you can see ALL your hours on MMORPG's of any kind... at least I remember seeing this from my son one time when we were totalling his hours played in WoW. I was surprised to see that he had also devoted hundreds of hours to playing other games during that same period, the 2000 hours played on WoW was just the tip of the iceberg. When he gets home today I will ask him and post back. Jane in CT p.s. My son sold his character on eBay (during some window when they were allowing these sales) for $350... he then turned around and used at least some of the money to buy more game-related stuff...ouch...

A couple years ago, I

A couple years ago, I purchased a WoW account from a gaming site, which I will not name here, for about 900 Canadian dollars. I do not want to encourage anyone to game more, but if they have an exceptional account already, they can unload it for 300-900 USD, depending on the state it's already in. Liz and I encouraged a mutual friend to do this with an uber account. He could have made that much or more through private sale, based on the number of maxed characters he had with top tier armor etc. People go crazy with this and dive into gaming, justifying their excessive playing with the idea they're going to make a "fortune" on their accounts. The thing is, they could have made quite a bit more with a minimum wage job at Walmart or Burger King if we add up all the time they invested. On Intellectual Property... The account is not really the gamer's to sell or trade. If you read the EULA (End User License Agreement) you will learn that all the in-game currency, virtual items and the account itself remains the property of Blizzard Entertainment. You're paying for server time, basically 'renting' the account from them for the duration of your time on WoW. When you quit, the account becomes dormant; it is their intellectual property. Selling the account is sort of like moving out of a rented apartment and attempting to sell the place to your friend, knowing full well that you never really owned it.
