Article about pathologizing porn addiction

http://medicalxpress.com/news/2014-02-porn-addiction.html

The general premise is that by watching only the symptoms you cannot determine whether your porn usage is "good" or "bad", it's the consequence of your action that matters. This sounds intuitive and common sense, yet it's not how DSM is used both in science and practice.

Consider also the last paragraph and change all porn-related words with related to internet and gaming. It's one of the reasons that as a mental health professional I'm against DSM as a whole, pathologizing many types of behavior and making the mental diagnosis guided by symptoms feasible mostly for the drug companies.

Fighting for a meaningful life: sober from computer games, porn and excessive internet usage since 6th Feb 2014.

We don't advocate debate

We don't advocate debate here on anything. Our main purpose is to recover from gaming, to offer insight to the anons about their families or friends who game addictively, and to spread the word about the problems of addictive gaming.

Whether the DSM is the best way to deal with any illness, seems like a debate to me.

All I know is that I'm a gaming addict and no longer have a choice over gaming.

Mer, Welcome.  Nice to have

Mer,

Welcome. Nice to have you here.

We exist for those who wish to quit games and those who know them who suffer from it. Seems like you qualify. :)

Since that is our purpose, we try to keep a clear focus. We try to be friendly to minors, so there are some guidelines about not discussing sex, drugs and some other edgy issues. Your post was not necessarily a violation, but it might be good for you to take a look so that you are more comfortable about everything.

Our guidelines for the forums are found here:

See you around.

I am a recovering computer game and gambling addict. My recovery birthday: On May 6, 2012 I quit games and began working a program of recovery through OLGA No computer games or slot games for me since December 12, 2012. No solitaire games with real cards since June 2013.
