Hooked on Games: The Lure and Cost of Video Game and Internet Addiction

I am posting my book as reference for those interested. The reviews and emails from readers have been positive. If you have Amazon Prime, then you can download the book at no charge to your Kindle.

Eye Surgeon Writes About His Video Game Addiction, Helping People See to Avoid the Trap

The multi-billion dollar video game industry is in the business of creating fun and enticing games that can be addictive. As addicted gamers feast on digital indulgences, real life is neglected and their reality crumbles around them. Hooked on Games is written by Brooke Strickland and Andrew Doan, MD, PhD, a physician with a research background in neuroscience, who battled his own addictions with video games. Dr. Doan was an addicted gamer, who at his peak, invested over 20,000 hours of playing games over a period of nine years. Dr. Doan's reckless compulsion to play games transformed him into a monster that almost destroyed his family, marriage, and career. He shares his expertise to educate others on the dangers of video game addiction and to provide hope for video game addicts and their families. Dr. Doan shares steps for gaming addicts to achieve recovery and steps for families and loved ones to intervene. Without attention to this quickest growing addiction, our society will suffer from the creation of Generation Vidiot, millions of people devoid of innovation and skills to live in the physical world.

"Tip of the Ice Berg: As a practicing family doctor who also specializes in sports medicine I am embarrassed that I did not realize the extent of gaming addiction until I was referred to this book. I have been a high school team doctor and have noticed more and more of the students hooked on these games but didn't realize depth of this addiction. It is as if we who only "like" computers but don't "love" computers are only now seeing the tip of a very large iceberg. This book will change the way I practice medicine to screen my patients for this addiction. Through Dr. Doan bearing his soul and addiction to the readers he has graphically enlightened all of us. I will be recommending this to all my patients at risk. Thank you Dr. Doan for opening our eyes to this unspoken addiction. Well written, fast paced and scholarly researched." - Jerry Hizon, MD

"As is true with many addictions, overuse of video games steals our valuable and limited time and minds." - Christie Morse, MD (Pediatric Ophthalmologist)

"Shocking insights into the minds of hardcore gamers." - Daniel Hunt (Former Competitive Gamer)

"Excellent engaging story about overcoming an addiction and what damage it had done to himself and family. Great story of how his problem turned his life around through his own strength and with help from his God." - Ron, Medrounds Publications, www.medrounds.org, Verified Reviews(r)

"Very sincere and open about his failings... sincere in his desire to communicate the depth and spread of this pernicious addiction. I was interested in the names of feel good enzymes and hormones released by brain: dopamine, epinephrine? Like how the response works. Now we need to think how to undo it and make real life rewarding." - Medrounds Publications, www.medrounds.org, Verified Reviews(r)

"Probably the most educated, intelligent and realistic about current society speaker I have heard in years! Maybe EVER - and this comes from a retired educator." - Medrounds Publications, www.medrounds.org, Verified Reviews(r)

"This was amazing. I never knew all of this. I suspected it! I've been a school teacher for 50 plus years so you know I am interested. Thanks so much and God bless you." - Dora Lou, Medrounds Publications, www.medrounds.org, Verified Reviews(r)

"Dr. Andrew Doan was a very powerful and interactive speaker. I found it extremely helpful to hear his story since I know someone who is extremely addicted to gaming and refuses to leave his room for more than the restroom. Dr. Doan's lecture helped me understand the addiction more and be more attentive to this struggle in society." - Danielle, Medrounds Publications, www.medrounds.org, Verified Reviews(r)

I listened to the podcast

I listened to the podcast you linked to the other day, Andy. Apologies for not returning and saying thank you for it. I'm wondering how many doctors will hear your message. Do you have any way of tracking that?

Acceptance. When I am disturbed, it is because a person, place, thing, or situation is unacceptable to me. I find no serenity until I accept my life as being exactly the way it is meant to be. Nothing happens in God’s world by mistake.  Acknowledge the problem, but live the solution!

I have no way to track how many doctors will hear that. BUT I just read that Douglas Gentile, PhD (who wrote the Foreword to Hooked on Games and has performed landmark studies in video game addiction) is going to the White House to discuss video games!

Dr. Doan thanks for share

Dr. Doan thanks for share with us the podcast. I heard it, and I consider that material like this gives insight on the facts that address the problem of excessive gaming as an adiction. People who are not aware of this addiction or that don't believe that it is posible to be a videogame addict should hear it. Very simple and clear.

Also, I heard the one about time managment. I like it too, very informative and concise.

"Take what you need and leave the rest." I got nothing but moments to live.

Numerous medical schools

Numerous medical schools have more than 10% of their students spending more than 40 hours per week playing video games and wasting time on social media. Medical students are failing because of Internet gaming.

It's interesting that when I speak to other doctors about "video game addiction", I have encountered that:

1) many know of a colleague who failed courses because of video games;

2) some know of a colleague who failed medical school entirely because of video games;

3) I know of a colleague who lost his license because he was playing video games instead of answering his page.

This is a HUGE problem!

I received a review from the

I received a review from the Mayor!

This is one of those books that you know you have to read all the while knowing someone you love is impacted and addicted to gaming. Doan draws you in with his own story w hich is stunning and compelling. Are our youth trading real life for an artificial world that takes place in the confines of their own mind? Doan makes a compelling case that should should not be ignored. As Mayor of my community I will be taking this issue up in my next term. I want to know if the youth in my community are being affected by this. I want to know if it is an impact on our local families and what can be done about it.

So many positives out of

So many positives out of this I don't know where to start, so I will just share some of my thoughts.

When I go to the doctors office, I usually end up sitting in the waiting room for hours reading brochures on various ailments. I realize having brochures in doctors offices may be cost prohibitive, so we may have to get a little creative. For example, if we all were to download and print a brochure to bring to our doctors or self help groups, this may be helpful. Andrew is already doing a fantastic job of promoting awareness, I am just trying to think of ways we can help.

Andrew, another idea I had is if you had a video of one of your speaking engagements at one of the schools you spoke at, perhaps other schools across the country could have access to it via download so that they can play it to their students in a class setting. Again, just trying to help, you most likely have thought of this already so please forgive my ignorance for not being up to speed.

I like what Getting a life said about God, and I would like to touch on that if I may. It has been said that the devil knows before we do of the threat some of us are to him, so he will do everything in his power to crush us. The only thing that makes sense to me, is that God is also aware, he is much too complex for us to fully understand so we just have to put our faith in his higher power. My take? he knew what he was doing and allowed what happened so that it could be used for good. Guess it's spiritual warfare in a sense, congrats on winning that battle.

And finally, kudo's for everything you have done. I am so proud of you, and thank you for all that you have done. I think of all of the people you have already helped, those who are in danger, and even the unborn children who will not fall into this trap.

Great reviews btw, may God bless you and continue to shine his light on you.

Great ideas! Thank you for your support and kind words!!!

The spiritual attacks have already come in the form of lost friends, family members who have "unfriended" me on Facebook, and people who come out to call me a "tool" publically. However, I am ready for this battle with God as my partner!

In regards to marketing, search Google for "Hooked on Games" and Amazon.com for "video game addiction". Also, search "Andrew Doan MD PhD" and look at my 100+ VERIFIED REVIEWS as a Speaker. I am also buying keywords for "video game addiction" on Google and sending people to the book at about 50 cents per click. I have now 903 followers on Facebook:

I just got invited to this school to talk to parents about video games, technology, and the teenage mind: http://www.smhall.org/

Several Passages that Keep me Strong in Mind, Body and Spirit:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. - Ephesians 6: 10-18

28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." - Matthew 11: 28-30

1 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8: 31

First, Andrew's flyer about his book is great, and if he gives us permission, we could download, print and take to our doctor's offices, churches, etc.

But I'm thinking it would also be appropriate to have an OLGA flyer. Maybe one already exists? Maybe we could adapt the text on the home page? Then we could all do the same with it: Print a few copies and take it around.

I'd be willing to help with it. What do you all think?

Another incredible Amazon.com Review. I am so glad the book is helping non-gamers understand why we gamers are addicted:

There has not been a lot of information available about video game addiction until recently. My son has been battling this problem for 7 years now,..starting when he was 17. He can't finish a semester at college because he keeps getting lost in the games and forgets all about classes. This book has given me some insight into WHY he can't seem to break the addiction. He FINALLY admitted he has an addiction but he still thinks he can control it. I am hoping this book will help him realize he needs help. I would definitely recommend this book to any family that is watching their child's life slip away as they play video games. In today's world you need to be able to use a computer without loosing yourself to playing video games. http://www.amazon.com/Hooked-Games-Video-Internet-Addiction/dp/193557602X/ref=tmm_pap_title_0

So Blessed the book is

So Blessed the book is impacting others and helping them see this addiction for what it is. Here is another new Amazon.com review:

I bought this book because I met the author and also because in my family we have someone hooked on games. My nephew dropped out of high school and is now 21 and to this day does not have a job or is not pursuing a career. He's hooked on games and we need help. Am passing this book on to my sister-in-law and brother and hope we can help this young man just as the author turned his life around. There is a great need for this as a percentage of our young are hooked on games. The computer can be used for both good and evil.

More amazing Amazon.com

More amazing Amazon.com Reviews! Thank you!

Hooked on this bookHooked on Games provided me with a first-person perspective into the virtual world. A world that is intentionally designed to not only lure you into it, but to keep you craving for more. Although I don't personally struggle with video game addiction, I have friends who have been sucked into some of these same games that Dr. Doan describes, and I have seen the negative effect it has had in their academic and social lives.

Dr. Doan keeps a level head in this book, and doesn't go as far as to say that video games should be banned, or that everyone can move on to lead a successful life if they would only sever their ties with these games. Rather, he focuses on the many experiences that he has had with his own addiction throughout his life and the tragedies experienced by others in similar circumstances, and really brings the potential consequences of game addiction to the forefront. He put his story out there, and his own career on the line, in order to enlighten and offer hope to those who find themselves in similar situations.

This book not only offers anecdotes, but also cites evidence from recent scientific literature and publications, and provides a variety of resources for those interested in seeking further assistance. A quick read that keeps you hooked on what each chapter has to offer, Hooked on Games is one of the few books I've recommended to friends and family. - By Cali Canuck

A revelation into Pandora's box

Dr. Doan does an impressive job revealing the very common, yet poorly recognized issue of video game addiction. As a fellow physician and father, I find the concerns for video addiction spot on. Few people can resist the magnificent game play of video games, from xbox, playstation, PC games, to the numerous games on our ipads and iphones. Look around, people are tractor beamed into their games.....it's how people kill time. Yet the truth revealed is that video games can suck precious hours of our lives away from meaningful time with family, jobs, and other pursuits.

As a parent, after reading this book, I have changed my view of games for my kids. Video games aren't benign. I limit my daughter's play time and am now in-tuned on what to watch for. I have seen the negative effects of game play in my peers and fellow employees. We have long recognized the devastating effects of drugs (health concerns, lack of drive, singular focus on the next high, the self-removal from normal society), these are the very same consequences of video game addiction.

If you have any concern that a friend, spouse, boy/girlfriend, son/daughter or yourself is spending too many hours on video games, read this book to provide a thorough understanding of this problem, what you can do about it, and how you can raise the awareness.

Dr. Doan is on the cutting edge of raising awareness to this prevalent and insidious problem! Dr. Doan, you are providing an invaluable service for literally millions worldwide. Thank you! - By T. Endicott "Most Commons"

A brave story

This is a brave book about a little-appreciated problem and kudos to Dr. Doan for the courage to tell his story. He came through the tunnel to the other side and is now a valuable member of the community of ophthalmologists. A good read and very instructive.

Excellent review of video game addiction

As a physician and parent of a gamer, I have had an interest in this topic for several years now. This book is packed with important information for video game addicts and their loved ones. Every parent should read this book before they let their child touch a keyboard. - By Gamersmom

This review is spot on and validating!

Insightful and Interesting Read
As an avid viewer of such shows like 'Intervention' and 'Hoarding: Buried Alive' I am fascinated by people's obsessions and the psychology behind them. Dr. Andrew Doan has written an excellent book about video game addiction, combining facts and statistics and putting a human twist on the story by detailing his own struggle with gaming. This is a must read for anyone who plays video games or for parents whose children are hooked. The effects of this addiction (which is still not as widely recognized as the addiction to drugs, alcohol, etc.) are tremendous. It has already produced a generation that is lethargic and overweight, socially inept, unable to differentiate between fantasy and reality and non-critical in its thinking.- JC Leland

I am really happy for these nice reviews. Nice that the book goes well. Also very nice that you took the effort to write it.

At the same time I am wondering what the added value is posting them here. ;-) Gives the impression (maybe not be intentionally) of using this forum to generate publicity, for which it is not meant.

Just something to consider.

Aww, for me it's just Andrew

Aww, for me it's just Andrew sharing the joy with us, Steele. Perception is everything.

Acceptance. When I am disturbed, it is because a person, place, thing, or situation is unacceptable to me. I find no serenity until I accept my life as being exactly the way it is meant to be. Nothing happens in God’s world by mistake.  Acknowledge the problem, but live the solution!

Sharing the joy to validate OUR ADDICTION! You can choose to ignore my posts too. :)

Also, publicity will help make this into an "official diagnosis" AND the book promotes OLGA ALOT.

I also plan to narrate the entire book for free and publish as an iTunes Podcast. It's not about the money but the mission to help others. :)

If you read the book, you

If you read the book, you will realize that Liz did an hour interview with me to tell her story of her son Shawn. The introduction is about Shawn and his video game addiction, as well as Liz's view on what lead to Shawn's suicide. Promoting the book, to me, helps justify that video game addiction is DEADLY. Shawn's loss is not wasted if others are saved through his story via the book.

The book is my personal, scientific, and medical arguement against the therapists and doctors who told Liz and Shawn that "at least he isn't addicted to alcohol and drugs" which ONLY AMPLIFIED Shawn's addiction! In addition, Sony Entertainment CEO told Liz is wrong about "video game addiction".

But Sony Online CEO John Smedley says the game did not cause Woolley's death. Smedley is one of the creators of Everquest. "When I spoke with Ms. Woolley I expressed my condolences. And it's really one of those terrible things that happens. And there's just nothing to suggest that Everquest had any role in his death," he says. "Everquest is a game. And I don't see any connection between a form of entertainment and somebody's tragic suicide."

According to Smedley, calling Everquest "addictive" is nonsense. "It's entertainment. Is a book dangerous? Is a TV show dangerous? I think the answer is no. People need to take responsibility and say, 'Hey, you know, this is too much. Enough's enough.' It's a game." - http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-18559_162-525965.html

THE ABOVE IGNORANCE REALLY BOTHERS ME! I am sorry if this is promotional, BUT I am on a crusade. I am fighting for this to be a real addiction so medical insurances will start helping. I am fighting for the Surgeon General to place a warning label on video games to prevent loss of life, loss of potential, and loss of families. This addiction needs a medical doctor, like me, to get on a national platform to make this argument. Until then, I will only see broken lives coming to Internet websites for help... with really no qualified medical people to facilitate recovery.

We are all here because we

We are all here because we have experienced the "dark-side" of gaming. Getting the word out and "telling" what is really happening because of these games is a big step in getting help for those affected by gaming addiction. I consider gaming addiction as the "society accepted" drug of choice today (just as smoking used to be!).

I just finished reading your book, Andrew. You are a God-send for our community and for validating to the public, what we already know, as we have been there!

I recommend that everyone here read it. If you feel lead to share your story , talk to Andrew because he has also started a publishing company! The more proof we have that excessive gaming can be an addiction for some, the better!

At this time, our website covers a lot more then support for our community. We also cover education and documentation. Hopefully in the near future, we will be able to split those up!

I agree, this is phenomenal

I agree, this is phenomenal information and anyone who comes to this site is looking for answers and every bit of information that can be provided is crucial. Publicity or not, it is important that all information regarding gaming addiction be exposed and available for everyone to educate themselves, "Knowledge is Power", the more you are aware the better you can prevent or fight the disease.

Awesome job Andrew!!!! I am dying to read the book.

Hugs xoxo

Liz and others, thank you so

Liz and others, thank you so much for your words of encouragement. It was NOT EASY WRITING AND PUBLISHING THIS BOOK. This book could lead to the end of my medical career. If you needed eye surgery... would you want a "video game addict who abused his wife to the point of rocking back and forth in a closet" to be your surgeon?! I am VERY transparent in my book.

Truthfully, if you are an addict or have been affected... buy the book. Write a review. Help me get to be a best seller and to spread the word. I want to be on the news. I want to be interviewed. I want to bring this to a public forum. Help me... help you!

I am tired of reading how addicts come here stating that other people think they are crazy or weak because of their "unreal addiction". As addicts, we come here for validation, yet most do not have the courage to stand up publically and say "learn from me". As addicts, we will hide behind anonymous names and avatars because of our shame.

You have a powerful ally here.... ME! I am willing to be the PUBLIC SPEARHEAD... help me help you by buying the book, writing a review, and spreading the word. Unless you have the courage to write your story publically, this is your chance, as addicts and those affected by this addiction, to voice your opinion about "video game addiction" on Amazon.com using my book to "validate this addiction". Can you imagine Hooked on Games with 100,000 reviews from addicts who say... "YES.. THIS AFFECTS ME?!" Can the American Medical Association deny my plea with this kind of data?! Can the world deny this problem with this kind of data?! This would be AMAZING data.. I can say.. see, there are 100,000 reviews from addicts who have been affected by this "addiction". It's time to call this for what it is and get these people help!

The best part... you can do it anonymously on Amazon.com because I understand the shame in doing it publically. This is your chance to actually do something that will help spread the word about gaming addiction.... write an anonymous review on amazon.com to validate your addiction.

Seriously, I am encouraging addicts to have the bravery to step up and help me by telling their stories on Amazon.com via my a Hooked on Games book review! It sounds so simple, but this is data I can use when I discuss this "addiction" with the so said, "medical professionals" and "gaming companies" who deny this is a "real addiction".

My public plea to all who have been affected by video game addiction:

Go Andrew!!

For those who have not seen his videos I can vouch that they are very well done, and that's an understatement!- as is his book and so informative. I think it will not only help those addicted but also parents who are worried about their kids becoming addicted -so very relevant to this site and forum!

Hey!! I shamelessly promote my (amateur) photographs lol!! I think of it as sharing too though- the beauty and diversity of the universe and a reason for big gratitude!! and hopefully an inspiration for some too. I think that it's very healing to share enthusiasm of all kinds here on a forum where some may feel so bogged down and unmotivated. At least that is what I hope.

Andrew's work is very specifically relevant I think.

Another amazing review on

Another amazing review on Amazon.com!

The book discusses many different types of games and how they affect the brain. I really like that Mr. Doan uses his own experiences and a lot of examples from around the world. It takes the debate from MMORPG to the use of Facebook, but uses a clinical perspective.

This is by far the best book I have read about the subject so far. Most likely since Doan is a doctor, but also have first hand experience with 20 000 hours of gameplay during 9 years (on average 6 hours/day for 9 years....). This guy knows his stuff which other doctors truly don't.

He mentions Philip Zimbardo, but I believe he truly does not share his opinion in many aspects. I believe this is true and that Zimbardo oversimplifies things or try to find answers in the wrong directions. Games are a new subject in the world of psychology and right now it is not psychologists who are the experts, but rather skilled professionals in general who has got first hand experience.

Another honorable mention would be Tom Bissel's Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter - even if this book is not truly about addiction, but really one man's journey through the world of video games and how they, in a way, saved his life.

It will take a long time before this new type of addiction will be acknowledged as truth - just like the case of alcoholism and gamble addiction. How come psychologists work so slowly?!

Anyway... the book is also easy to read, but above all it's got many insightful points.

I highly recommend it- Tomas Nilsson (Goteborg, Sweden)

and reviews from parents at Saint Mary's Hall:

After sending my kids to a therapist to get help and it being unsuccessful, then searching for a new therapist who deals with computer/video game addiction and finding too few that specialize with this type of addiction, I am grateful to have found this book to better understand what a computer addiction is. I have two more chapters to read. I now feel better equipped to help my kids find the help they need and better understand the challenges of this addiction.

For those who think I wrote

For those who think I wrote a book because I want to make money or increase fame, please think again. I wrote "Hooked on Games" to stand up for the lost and addicted. This is the ridicule I receive for spreading the word and speaking truth about gaming addiction.

http://www.amazon.com/review/R16RCTQAGK8EM4/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R16RCTQAGK8EM4

Why do books like this exist. I did not read any of it but from the reviews it seems like a terrible book. 'Video games ruining my marriage and relationship with my family' WTF is that, it ruins your marriage because you let it I play tons of video games and hours on end of it but I still be with my family. It is your fault not the games fault you stopped being with friends, family, etc. "The multi-billion dollar video game industry is in the business of creating fun and enticing games that can be addictive." This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, you cannot be 'addicted' to video games, the definition to addiction:
"the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma." -Dictionary.com How does playing video games cause 'severe trauma', some people may say it's psychological but no, being 'addicted' to something means you will start to completely break down when you stop. I go to school socialize hang out with friends and other things but as my past time I play many games hours on end. If you say you can be addicted to games needing to play them all the time, well you need your phone, electricity, transportation, but you can't be addicted to those just because you use them all the time. Here's a video helping my point(hopefully it lets you click it): [...]

Somehow I missed this post when it was first posted. Just wanted to say that there is an OLGA brochure somewhere. We had several of them printed a few years back. I brought some to the psychiatry department at our local med school.

i wonder how Dr. Gentile's trip to the White House went. Considering the topic of the meeting: "Enhancing Well-being and Attentional Control through Games and Interactive Media: A Neuroscientific Approach." I'm not sure how much discussion there was about video game addiction.

And, Andrew, check out the

And, Andrew, check out the hate Katie Couric's site got for doing that program on video game addiction last week. I look at it as junkies coming out of the woodwork with nastiness to defend their fix - part of the darkest side of addiction. So sad and frightening that they come from a place of so much anger and ugliness, but the message of hope and freedom will penetrate some of those walls of defense.

@Gamersmom, Dr. Gentile did

@Gamersmom, Dr. Gentile did not have the chance to address gaming addiction as the White House was interested in positive aspects of gaming (very disappointing). I am updating the OLGA brochure in partnership with reSTART's Hilary Cash, PhD and Cosette Rae and the American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmologists & Strabismus Surgeons. Our plan is to distribute flyers to all Pediatric Ophthalmologists' and Pediatricians' Offices. This is one reason why we need to raise more money, which I am working on.

@Gettingalife, I know. It's sad! Digital crack addicts in denial. I expect to be digital crack addicts' public enemy #1. I am sure death threats will come eventually. Oh well.... I will sell more books dead than alive.

My book is officially Free

My book is officially Free for Download now until Sunday July 21st!

Review From Reader: "I would recommend this book to everyone that plays video games. I feel that way because I think it is important to be aware of the potential dangers of becoming addicted. I myself grew up playing video game but far from being an addict. I started becoming addicted to video games after I came home from Iraq. At first I turned to alcohol to numb the pain and take away the memories of war. Soon I couldn't function well because of hangovers and drinking $100.00 or more a week became very expensive. I traded one addiction for another. I turned to my Xbox and computer games. I still had an 8 hour job but I also put in 5-7 hours of gaming a day during the week (more on the weekend if I could) This became my routine because I was still suffering from PTSD and playing video games made me forget about what was going on around me. It also gave me an adrenal rush daily (especially if I played Call of Duty). I had depression because my brain stopped releasing some of the chemical I was flooded with while in combat. Call of Duty MW2 gave me that rush back. After reading this book it reinforces my fears. I have wasted so much time when I could be spending it with my wife or kids. I could have a PHD by now if I spent my time in college instead of gaming. I know I have a problem because I asked my 5 your old what he wants to be when he grows up. He told me, "I want to be like you dad, and play games all day." That really hurts. Thank you Dr. Doan for pointing me in the right direction to help me break my bad habit."

I recently received this

I recently received this text from a father! Brings joy to my heart!!!

Nearly with tears I send you this text. Late last night my son and I finally finished your book. My son showed me his months and months of work in the game called "Clash of The Clans". He showed me the text chat room portion of the game where all his buddies communicate one with another. To his embarrassment, we saw how many of these 11-year-olds that all go to his former Christian school creatively using the F-word talking about other 11-year-old girls at school. I didn't say anything to him all and did not ask who these people were behind their clan identities. Within minutes, he deleted months of work and told me he was done with gaming. To God be the glory for His testimony through your experience. I'm looking forward to much excitement our next time together.

An update on my son: he sold his complete Wii System and all eight games to the local game store!

Father of 11-year-old boy.
