I HATE this game but I CRAVE it! What to do?

Hi all,

I've joined this site, but this section still seems like the best place to post my question.

I was addicted to Farmville a number of years ago, but somehow I managed to quit it.  But then this past March I got started playing another stupid Facebook game called Island Experiment.  I can't seem to stop playing it.  I can't tell you the number of times I have removed it from my Facebook account and blocked it, unfriended all my "friends" from the game, etc.  But I keep going back.

The REALLY CRAZY thing is that I HATE the game!  I think I hated it from the minute I started it!  I started playing it because I was playing the Farm Town (NOT Farmville) game and wanted a piece of equipment that cost "Farm Cash."  There was an offer for free Farm Cash if I would play Island Experiment up to level 10.  So I actually struggled to reach level 10 -- it was a lot harder than any other game I've ever tried.  It's very, very tedious and frustrating -- more so than Farmville, even.  It almost seems like they TRY to frustrate you into spending real money, because it's almost impossible to complete any quests without either spending real money or staying chained to the computer 24/7.  They have different intervals when the game will give you something, and if you don't pick up that item at that time, the timer won't start for the next production cycle for it.  Some are every two hours, some are every three hours, some are every two and a half hours, etc.  So you can't just step away for three hours because other things will be ready to collect at various times during that interval.  And some of the quests are timed, so you have to finish by a deadline that's almost impossible to meet unless you never take a break to sleep, eat, or do anything else.  I'm retired and on a fixed income, so I can't afford to spend much money on a game.  I've spent a lot more money on this one than I ever should have or intended to.  And this game has just about taken over my life!  My arthritis has gotten a LOT worse from sitting at this computer constantly!

Some people say just to cut back on the number of hours you spend playing the game, and get involved doing other things.  But for the reasons I've given above, it's almost impossible to play this game casually.  It's the type of game that is almost "all or nothing."

I had intended to stop and delete the game once I reached level 10 and got my Farm Cash.  Well, I reached level 10, I got my Farm Cash, but for some reason I couldn't quit the game.  I don't know why.  I feel like I'm totally NUTS.  Almost everyone else who says they are addicted to a game LOVES the game they are addicted to.  So I can't believe that I am ADDICTED to a game that I HATE!

Welcome Sharon

Welcome Sharon

I am sure many other gamers will relate to the game becoming a chore. You are not alone.

In some ways it is very fortunate that you hate the game ..you might have a lot more trouble to do something about it if you loved it and your health would then get worse..

If you can't moderate, then then only option is that you should quit. This thread shows how this website can help you do that.

Hi Sharon and welcome to Olga

Hi Sharon and welcome to Olga.  The fact that you hate the game, yet keep playing it is a good sign that you're addicted.  I'm not sure how other games affect you, but check out this page to find out if you are addicted to gaming:  http://www.olganon.org/self_tests_on_gaming_addiction

For those of us who find that we are truly addicted, the only answer for us is to stop all electronic gaming.  However, this is no easy task either.  I wanted to stop gaming for a year before I was finally able to quit.  And it's not been easy to stay quit.  It's a lifetime battle.  I would encourage you to read posts to acquaint yourself with gaming addiction and learn more about what you need to do in order to quit.  There's much information on this website.

Best of luck to you.

I can already tell this is the place I need to be!

Thank you everyone!  I can already tell this is the place I need to be!  I came here earlier and chatted with a lady when I was feeling really bad withdrawal symptoms.  She was compassionate and chatting with her really helped.  I can see that you people here understand me, and that means so much!

I'm not sure, though, how to find and get into the online meetings.  I tried tonight, but even though I thought there was an online meeting going on tonight at 9:00, I couldn't find it.  Can someone help me please?  I would like to start coming to meetings.  Thank you.
