Trying to figure out how to get out of this lifestyle.

I have tried many times to quit gaming. I have been playing dota 2 for three years now. I have over 4.5 months logged into the game, and it is not the only game that I have played in this span of time. When I have tried to quit in the past, the best I ever did was a 2 month clean phase and then I got right back into it. I don't think I can quit on my own, which is why I am now seeking help.

I don't want this to change my lifestyle anymore. Gaming is becoming all that I care about. I can spend eight or more hours a day, get very little sleep, coffee it up, and then go the next day without feeling overly guilty. This is a problem. I could use help. Where do I begin? What are the strategies to stopping the first few days? What did you guys do with the time that you were gaming so that you didn't go crazy?

I didn't want to come here because I didn't want to admit it was this bad, but it is. I need help.

Thanks for sharing, keep

Thanks for sharing, keep coming back!

I can relate a lot with what u wrote about not being able to stay away from games for any substantial time. I also had trouble relapsing over and over again the first 2 years i tried to quit. From your phrasing, calling gaming a "lifestyle", i must ask: why are you not calling it an addiction? Do you consider yourself a "gaming-addict"? Because for many of us, this is a REAL addiction. Personally i could not stop relapsing until i changed my mindset from "im stupid doing this stupid habit" to "i have a sickness called gaming addiction".

The thing that changed me from hopelessly trying to quit and fail, to instead feeling better and getting some substantial game-free time, was:

1. Going to face-to-face meetings with NA

2. Getting a sponsor and start working step 1 of the 12 step program.

Perhaps this can work for you too :) good luck

Never alone, go to meetings <3 Mumble voice meetings on cgaa are great, see you there <3

Thanks for your reply

Yes, I do call it an addiction. Although it's hard to... The pride in me doesn't want to call it that.

NA doesn't mind our attendance? How did you participate in their meetings?

The people at NA don't mind,

The people at NA don't mind, we only refer to "using" and "addiction", never any specific substance. No one will ever ask you "what did you use?" I know some people at NA who are there mainly for alcohol or gambling, and not for "traditional drug use". Generally i don't tell people there im a gaming addict, just "addict" because i wanna blend in.

However, with my sponsor I'm very open, and he knows my main issue is gaming. I was afraid he would turn me away because of it, but he didn't, on the contrary he was very understanding :)

Good luck

Hi Dmg2000 and welcome to

Hi Dmg2000 and welcome to Olga.  What helps me is going to meetings.  If you want to try a meeting, you can find the meeting schedule here.
