Online versus computer-based games

What do people think of non-online games? In the past I have played some games from a CD where I could spend a moderate amount of time over a few weeks or months with breaks of a few days if I wished without feeling obliged to spend hours per day to complete the game. It's only when I started playing an online game I had problems because of one, the way they made it so that the tasks were never-ending like a soap-opera story so you never got to finish, and two, because they gave awards for logging in every day. Also, the game involved joining groups and developing friendships and a sense of loyalty to your group, and knowing how hard it would be for the group to progress when an active player like yourself drops out.
