breaking the cycle

I have not gamed all week and its hard but feels good.  I stopped a couple years ago for a month or two and found this site.  Life got better in somes ways but not others and I got back into some of my big games.  This winter was a wreck, can't believe I still have my job.

What do people do here?  I am open to advice.  I want to keep my streak going.  Can't afford to lose my job.

I read the big list on things to do besides gaming and already have some of that in place.  Its so hard to keep busy all day.  I still want to game sometimes and staying busy helps but I get worn out.  How do I unwind?

Welcome J.  Glad you found us here.

What do people do here?  How do I unwind?

It was hard for me to relax when I first got off games.  Really, my focus then needed to be just not starting the first video game each day, taking it 24 hours at a time.  I read on this forum, went to the voice meetings, and futzed around a lot on the computer.  I felt out of sorts, but I can see now that I was also getting better very slowly day by day.  It took months for my motivation and energy to get better and for my sleep patterns to straighten out.

Over time, I picked up an old hobby here, a new hobby there, and my life filled up.  I found good ways to deal with stress and relax some.  It's different for everyone, but for me it was getting outside, walking in the woods, soccer with friends, meditating with a group, and sometimes just hanging out.  It definitely helped to talk with people in recovery from video gaming addiction on the phone and hear them in the meetings.

Hang in there!

Thanks for writing me back.

Thanks for writing me back.  I now have a full seven days without gaming.  But its Saturday night tonight and I have no plans and already I feel like my grip is slipping.  I need to get back in touch with a couple of old friends and get out.

I will look into the online meetings and will have to try one out.  Seems I need help keeping my resolve up.
