Need some help.

I've been addicted for quite a few years now I'm 33 and used to play games since a kid.

I stopped for a few years over uni and had a good social life then.

A few years after uni i got back into games and for a few years it was online poker and gambling not gaming. Managed to stop gambling and got back into games.

Been a serious game addict again for a few years now.

Tried CBT again last month or whenever for 6 weeks.

Started to do Pilates, gym classes and want to start guitar again. Trying to do meditation and cooking also but think I still need more activities.

On top of all this i have a more serious mental health problem underlying that I've been diagnosed with both schizophrenia and anxiety and also had a diagnosis of mild dyspraxia as a child. Take medication but sometimes do forget it accidentally.

Welcome M

Welcome M

Thanks for sharing your experience

Wecome to OLGA!

As a parent of an adult child who is an internet/gaming addict, and from reports by parents who come here  we observe that children who are very bright and affected by anxiety type issues are more likely to be affected by excessive gaming. That said, excessive playing can also mimic mental health symptoms which were not there before gaming, or at least make an existing problem much worse. What is good is that quitting games can bring about a healing process over time. This can take many months / years to get the full benefit.

I am glad you are here and looking at getting a more balanced life with new activities. Hope you find this site helpful to you! You are not alone with this.

Re: need some help

Welcome Mark, glad you're here reaching out for help.  When I reached out, that was a turning point for me.  I can relate to what you wrote.  I hit a bottom with compulsive gaming when I was in my 30s, and online poker was a huge time (and money) sink for me.  Also I've been dealing with other mental issues besides the gaming addiction, as does almost everyone else here too.  It really helped me to connect to people who have successfully stayed off games and turned their lives around for the better at the meetings.

Hope to see you at one soon, you're worth it.  Feel free to just come and listen.
