Antisocial Personality Disorder

I was on Wikipedia looking up WoW just to see what would be said about it. Then I saw under "concerns" game addiction so, I clicked the link. I found in the article antisocial pesonality disorder as one of the possibly causes for addiction. I clicked the link. I read the symptoms. The described my husband almost perfectly. I called him over to look at it and he agreed! Does anyone have any experience with this?

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that is why it is called the present.

Then again, playing Wow long

Then again, playing Wow long enough can make a normal person VERY antisocial.

I find the more people

I find the more people immerse themself in wow......the more they isolate from people. It seems to go hand in hand.

The question is....will you be able/courageous/adult enough to sacrifice that which merely pleases you...for that which will truly fulfill you? That is the question of personal growth.

Chicken or egg?

Chicken or egg? ;)

My son became anti-social

My son became anti-social after he started playing Everquest. Before that game, at least he "attempted" to fit in with real society.

i always thought i was

i always thought i was social and then i hid away in wow and pushed everyone and everything away. Once in recovery my truths began to surface and i realized i was not the social butterfly i once believed. I had social anxieties that i tried to cover up. Playing wow in my basement was another way to deny my problems relating to people. Now, I am far from a social butterfly but I am a healthier social being who at times still struggles with withdrawing during stressful events (part of life) However, I am able to make connections now in my real life and enjoy them. imho the journey of recovery brings us back to where we were before standing on that addictive edge.

I would say I became

I would say I became anti-social as a result of my excessive playing, but that is just me. I am sure there are many people who start playing to escape from feeling anxious. I guess on some level, we would not have started playing games to begin with if we did not crave some form of escapism.

Until we are tested, how do we know if we will pass?

Actually, I have quite

Actually, I have quite extensive experience with aEUoeantisocial personality disorder typesaEU in my former life I worked with parolees and other clients who were the most resistive, as they say.. Please donaEU(tm)t make armchair diagnosisaEU(tm) of anyone, it isnaEU(tm)t in anyoneaEU(tm)s best interest to do so.. A diagnosis of any disorder is best left to those qualified to do so.. In my day we used to use the MMPI (The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) as one of many tools used in a diagnosis, upon consulting with at least two other professionals we would make a tentative finding of a disorder if it was warrantedaEU| Any good clinician worth their salt will tell you that the addictive behavior is most likely the cause of any other maladaptive behavior that the aEUoeclientaEU is experiencing.. The way you find this out for certain is quite simple really. Cease and desist with the maladaptive behavior and see if the other symptoms persist.. If they still do then a proper diagnosis of the real root of the problem can be achieved, but nothing can be achieved while the aEUoeclientaEU is still immersed in the addiction.. Yes.. Again any good clinician will tell you that the CHICKEN most certainly came first and then the EGG.. For a good read on Antisocial Personality Disorder Types get Inside the Criminal Mind by Dr. Stanton E. Samenow. DonaEU(tm)t think that after reading the book or any of his other books for that matter this gives you enough information to make a diagnosis, quite to the contrary it is only the beginningaEU| Leave the diagnosis to those who are qualified to make them with all the information necessary to do so..

I felt that my previous post

I felt that my previous post needed a little more clarity, this is completely from my own perspective.. Addictive behavior doesnaEU(tm)t need a diagnosis for those of us who know it first hand.. We have seen it, husband/wife/child/other loved one sitting at the computer hours at a time neglecting their other responsibilities. We have smelled it, the same person not showering, not cleaning up after themselves, not throwing the trash for days at a time, not doing dishes for days or even weeks at a time, not doing laundry, not cleaning house.. If this addiction has a smell it is the smell of rotting garbage and body odor mixed with the fresh cup of coffee they just poured so they can get back to their game.. We have felt it, the neglect and the pain of watching the person you love waste away OUR time in front of the computer, the pain of resentment at the game and the other world they choose to live in.. These things are only a few of the ways this addiction has affected me, no matter what you choose to call it, addiction, problematic game playing, obsessive compulsive gaming, the bottom line is that it has created a situation that is unbearable and no longer tolerable.. We can point to the computer and say out loud, THAT IS THE PROBLEM THE GAMES YOU PLAY CONSTANTLY ARE THE PROBLEM.. We donaEU(tm)t need to call it anything other than what it isaEU| When people put other labels on a problem that is so blatant and obvious it creates a whole maze of complexity whereby there is room for rationalization, justification, intellectualizations of a problem that needs to be addressed in the most direct and focused way possible.. I agree that there are certainly other disorders which manifest themselves with addictions, however, I donaEU(tm)t believe that to be the general rule.. To the contrary, generally when a person works on their addiction most of the other symptoms resolve themselves with time.. If the other problematic behavior does not resolve itself with the treatment of the addiction, then you by all means should consult a mental health professional for further evaluation..

I totally agree--and the

I totally agree--and the lack of personal hygiene and no desire to "do anything' he tells me--and that includes sex! Resentment is just the beginning of the range of negative emotions this imparts to those who are a part of a gamers life! I want to know why the RUSH has such a dramatic hold on them? What can be replaced for it? Recently my husbands computer was broken and he did go thru withdrawl--and it was not a pretty sight to me--he was overly anxious, very negative and angry toward me and bored to tears--he literally slept all the day and would not do a thing! We have been through counseling and he has quit--in denial! Does antidepressant medication help this addiction?

I think the correct question

I think the correct question is "what motivates us for escape?"...once we fiqure that unfullfilled need, which is a normal need to a degree, we can accept change. "Replacing it" changes the form...even "self help" can be addictive...but a lot cheaper and harmful! Keep coming back and be good tou yourself...its all about you!

There can be an incline

There can be an incline towards anti social behavior but games like WoW definitely make it a lot worse since having the option is a good excuse to not go out and stay to play the game. Especially if players are in guilds and raid, since you have to be home at a certain time and stay online for the next 4 hours to raid. It has a life of its own. My friends are so hooked that they don't talk to me now that I quit because I am against playing that game and have realized its destruction. I think they are afraid of me because they know I am right and they don't want to accept it and face reality :(

An hour of gaming is an hour wasted.
