Why why why why why WHY is it that so many gamers assume that this board is implying that ANYONE who plays EQ is addicted?
Just remember, you have two ears, two eyes, but one mouth. Which one(s) do you think you should logically use the most?(figuratively speaking)
Because some of us are misinformed.
Now that I am informed, I will do better to watch myself. Both in future correspondences here and other places.

Simply because they are paranoid, and when paranoid, they naturally have their defenses up. They read a bit of this and bit of that and concieve a point, blended in with their paranoia, and think we assume they are addicted, and we are plotting to purge this society of online gaming, and of course quite specifically, Everquest.
But despite gamers' flames in this board, it (OLGA) continues to help gamers and relatives of the gamers, and this is the objective of this board. As long as that objective is met, flames are just pests along the way.

David,
Your question - Quote:Why why why why why WHY is it that so many gamers assume that this board is implying that ANYONE who plays EQ is addicted?I wonder the same thing myself.
I believe a lot of the questions and ideas GothicKub had before he came here, are sadly, what a lot of people have of us, before they come and find out for themselves.
Our mission plainly states why we are here: We are a fellowship of people sharing their experience, strengths and hope to help each other recover and heal from the problems resulting from compulsive game playing.
That is it!
It is our job to educate those who do come, and have the courage to ask. We are more than happy to do that.

I think one thing, is people, when they think of someone saying, "I kicked that habit!" or "I kicked that addiction!" they then think, (wrongly I might add) that suddenly YOU want to make THEM stop their habit/addiction/whatever.
That was seriously strong in my case. I was scared that suddenly I'd be deluged with, "your ruining your life!" "You're playing something EVIL!" "You'll never escape unless you do XXX", "YOUR ADDICTED AND YOU MUST BE CURED!". These are irrational, I realize now. Why you would care what I do, when you dont even KNOW me, is beyond me. I see this NOW, but when I first saw the 20/20 episode that introduced me to this, those were my thoughts.
I think this is why people react the way they do when they come here. They're afraid that your going to tell them what they are doing is wrong. And who really wants to be told that they're doing something wrong?
Just my 2 cents on the matter.

Brien,
We try not to be co-dependents, here.
If someone wants to get help, we are here for them.
If they don't want to, fine, keep playing, but remember, we are here, should they need us.
We are not here to convince anyone they "need" help.

Liz,
I completely understand now. But before I didn't. And I think thats what alot of people think when they first hear about this site. Right or wrong. I think its human nature not to want to be told about our shortcomings.

I appreciate active gamers who stick around and participate constructively in this discussion. If I'd been here a few months ago, I would have been sarcastic or cynical, but by God's grace my eyes have been opened.
That's not to say that all those who insist they aren't addicted are in denial, but I imagine there are some. We'll still be here if people need help in the future.
