South Park again

I only saw the last half of it (I have it clocked on the Dish box for later tonight), but the new South Park episode entitled "Guitar Queer-O" appears to address gaming addiction and its effect on RL relationships.

Re: South Park again

As more and more people become aware of the dangers of video game addiction, there will be more situations in the media, such as episodes of popular shows like "South Park", that deal with it. This tends to feed on itself to some extent as the more media exposure there is, the more people become aware of it thus increasing interest in getting information from the media which causes the media to then place more attention on it. Once it reaches a certain critical mass, this looping mechanism may mean that there will then be a quite rapid rise of the awareness among the general public regarding this problem. At that time, any resources that help to deal with this problem, such as OLGA, may become very well used.

I agree completely with you John. Missed you at the meeting tonight.

Disney has actually caught on if no one has said anything. The Show "Suite Life of Zach and Cody" featured an episode where Zach gets addicted, loses all touch with his friends, and spends too much time playing. It also features one of the grown ups on the show, who is a main character, that is addicted to the same game. The game is a MMORPGs.

On the other hand, we have lots of sitcom and TV examples of alcoholics, potheads, etc., that try to make them "funny" as opposed to someone that needs help.

And yet, Disney has created Pirates of the Caribbean, the MMORPG. Do they really understand?

Anna, I suspect that at least some of the people at Disney do understand. However, as a major international corporation beholden to their shareholders, I think that a more pertinent question is to what extent do they (as a company) care, especially since it is not illegal and there does not yet seem to be very much general public disapproval of it yet? Please note that I am not trying to single out Disney here since I think that this same issue applies in general to all of the major international corporations, both those involving video games such as Blizzard with WoW plus those in non-game related fields such as pharmaceutical companies regarding drug use, your best overall health interests and their profits.

And I think, that forbidding all the MMORPGS and their development is not the solution to the problem. This would never work as there are way to many people in the play. But I think, that these companys could take care of the addiction problem in a more serious way, by building warnings and restrictions in the game itself. Otherwise this i sdone by the government like in china. I mean ideas like in GW, where every hour pops up a message saying: You played for XX hours - please take a break.

Re: South Park again

I loved that South Park ep. I want to separate Rock Band/Guitar Hero from MMOs because it creates a different kind of illusion. Hardcore players of Rock Band/Guitar Hero think their gaming...talents translates over to the talents as that of a REAL musician.A I tried the game and only developed a yearning to take up violin again.A I really didn't enjoy it. The hardcore players try out a real guitar and get bored after a week (a real guitar has no silly moving bars you must compete with, also you have to actually try harder to look good when you rock out IRL).A Not enough pretty graphics, I suppose. I like music sims, but, as a musician, Guitar Hero/Rock Band kind of sickens me.A I played it an expected the insturment to give me that loving tremor stringed insturments give to your soul--even the electric ones-- but no, nothing. For the price of Rock Band, why not practice real music?A Buy a student guitar or a used guitar.A Maybe I'm biased, but the hardcores of this game make me sad for them. Playing a real insturment is awesome. This isn't.
