There is a story going around AA that I've heard for many years; it points out why some people are so resistant to getting help.
The story is: there is a burning building. In the building is a person who wants out badly; he is burning and suffering from smoke inhalation. The firefighters are climbing into the building to rescue the person but he won't come out, even though he is right by the door and can walk out at any time.
What he says is "I won't come out until you prove to me that you can save me."
And all that person has to do is trust.
