Next time you're worried about/missing your gaming friends or questioning whether this is an addiction...

Ascender sent me an article about another death of a person in an internet cafe who spent 3 days gaming playing the same games we all do/did there nonstop. This article came days after the death of another gamer who after 5 days of nonstop gaming died.

What caught my attention was the final sentence in the article which read:

"Police said in both cases other patrons appeared nonchalant about the deaths, continuing playing even when tables were cordoned off for investigators to gather evidence"

These were video game gamers who gamed in real life in the same place together. So I can only imagine how much more ingame "friends" really "care" when we're not there anymore.

The other thing striking about this is for family and friends of gamers - next time you question whether this is an addiction and you want to think your gamer is choosing games over you or so forth, take note that the other gamers who go to this internet cafe to play, are still nonchalantly playing after two of their fellow gamers dropped dead in the place. Most rational people would have reacted to young people (both were in their 30's btw) dropping dead in a place they go to regularly and not wanted to at the least go back to that same place to game. The closest thing to this type of reaction is how crack addicts in crack houses behave or how heroin addicts casually talk about another one of their using friends OD'ing. That's how powerful an addiction video game addiction can be.

This is so sad and scary, I totally agree. Could you please post the link to the article if you have it?

As a computer game addict

As a computer game addict myself, I notice how my hands and feet get cold from sitting & playing nonstop. The blood doesn't flow so good and its viscosity increases as it slowly congeals.

The did an experiment in the 60s where rats had electrodes stimulating the pleasure parts of the brain. They then rigged a level that they could push to activate the electrodes which they placed across an electrified floor. The rats would literally burn their feet off to get to that level and push it repeatedly.

I feel like addicts are like those rats who have tapped into the pleasure centers of the brain and exploited them. It is a very difficult thing for the higher centers of the brain to overcome the limbic, lower parts of the brain.

Ideally, you would take your patient and immobolize them for some duration, like is done with a cast. For addicts, constant checks (multiple times a day) could provide the immobilization necessary to get them to break the habit.

Most rehabs don't employ these practices and take your money and tell you good luck and shut the door... it is a sad state of affairs. What is needed is daily checks for perhaps years.

This is indeed incredibly

This is indeed incredibly frightening.

When I was at my worst I would play all day, sat in front of my computer without hardly moving away from the keyboard at all. only for bathroom breaks and to grab some quick microwavable ( unhealthy ) food to eat in front of the computer again whilst on the game.

I noticed that I would get pins and needles in my feet, and neck ache from my posture at the keyboard, not to mention headaches and insomnia.

Still I continued to carry on with my habit, not really aware of the effect it was having on my overall health. I guess these guys were addicted to the extreme, and its just so sad to know that they probably begun their gaming addiction subtely like I did, just instead of realising the damage before it was too late, and were able to start on a road to recovery, the games took their lives.
